Description for Dianthus  

They belong to the family of Caryophyllaceae and are mainly considered a native of Europe and Asia and are respected as Flowers of the Gods. They are made to grow into a lustrous bush by careful trimming and are grown in a lush, picturesque manner. A Dianthus flower has five petals characterized by a frilled margin and are known to last till 8 weeks. They can be biennial, perennial and even annual in nature and are often found decorated on pots.

These flowers typically grow between 6 and 18 inches in pink, purple, red, yellow and white, however, there are a number of variations of this flower. For a healthy growth, these flowers need a sumptuous amount of sunlight. These flowers are considered the oldest one on earth and spread from 0.5 to 1 feet. The genus has around 300 species but however, not all of them are cultivated. Proper sunlight acts positively for a colourful bloom, and the plants are commonly cross breed to improve their sturdiness so that they can resist both cold and drought.

Carnations breed the largest flower of the Dianthus species which stretches to 3 inches in diameter. Their leaves are narrow while the colour differs from green to poppy-blue. Dianthus is popular for their beauty, easy maintenance and medical values like during constipation.

Tends to rot in excess moisture and therefore should be best kept dry. The flower tends to get affected by garden pests. 


Planting And Care






Need alkaline, and thoroughly drained soil for and should be steered clear of frost. The pH balance should be kept at 6.5 levels. A 6 hours’ sunlight is favourable to these plants and they can be both grown in pots and garden. Mulching is never advisable and deadheading is one of the surest ways to keep the plant healthy. During planting wearing, gloves could keep at bay allergic reactions towards the flower.

Watering should be done carefully only around the base strictly to keep the foliage dry and eliminating chances of mildew spots. The soil should be however kept moist, and watering should be restricted to around once in a week. 1 inch of water is the accepted measure to promote healthy growth.

Liquid fertilizers are best for Dianthus every 6 to 8 weeks or one can apply slow-release fertilizer during their planting. Extra care should be given to insects and pests which can obstruct their growth.
