Description for Table Palm Plant

Table palms belonging to the Arecaceae is considered a perennial plant and they tend to vary in shape and size quite a lot. These plants can be grown as shrubs, climbers, and trees which produce coconuts, dates, betel nuts and acai fruit. They grow best in well-drained soil, both in the garden and in pots. Ideally, they can grow till 10 to 15 meter in height and is widely used for interior decoration, in offices and residences. They produce lustrous and wide, green leaves on an erect single trunk. These trees are famed to have over 2600 species in total and generally thrive best in partial shade.

These trees are widely famous for their economic value in the market and grow widely in tropical and subtropical regions. They can be found in North America, the Caribbean, Hawaii France, and California as well. In Asia, tropical palms are common for making wine, jelly, and wax.

They need the right quantity of light and moisture, a good balance of shade and sunlight is healthy for them. Waterlogging around the roots of these plants would cause permanent rot.  

Choose sandy soil for their growth and the soil should be provided with slow release fertilizers rich in potassium and micronutrients for healthy growth. While choosing the plot, it should be kept 2 to 4 inches larger than the actual size of the tree filled with fresh potting soil. 

Every time after watering, the soil should be left to drain itself, if the plant is potted, the container should have a number of percolations. In order to remove indoor dust from the leaves, instead of watering one can rub their leaves with damp clothes. Filtered water is best suited for Table Palms.

Fertilization should be best done during spring especially the one rich in nitrogen. Fertilization every 45 days is best to keep them healthy. Application of excessive fertilizer can harm indoor plants. 

Caring for Table Palm

Excess dry air can suck out moisture from the leaves and render it brown in the tips. Trimming of the brown leaves is essential for maintaining a healthy growth of these plants. Care should also be taken while watering the plants since an overdose can consequent in spots. A regulated amount of insecticide can also keep at bay red spider mites and mealy bugs that are common issues with these plants. Planting in winter should be furthermore avoided because it stunts their growth and enhances root rot.
